TRENTO (ITALPRESS) – A young electrical engineer was arrested by Carabinieri from the Special Operations Grouping and the Bolzano Provincial Command on charges of aggravated propaganda and incitement to commit racial, ethnic and religious discrimination and training for activities with the purpose of terrorism, including international terrorism.
The order, issued by the Judge for Preliminary Investigations of the Court of Trento at the request of the District Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Directorate of the Trento Public Prosecutor’s Office in coordination with the National Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Directorate, stemmed from a complex judicial police investigation activity initiated in September 2023 following a contribution from Italian intelligence in the context of which a social profile active in the dissemination of national-socialist material and support of the jihadist terrorist organization known as the “Islamic State” had been highlighted.
The R.O.S. Carabinieri through refined investigative activities identified the subject despite the fact that he made use of multiple and advanced computer devices to avoid being identified. The investigation confirmed intense activity in the dissemination of multimedia propaganda content of both jihadist and anti-Semitic nature as well as found a learning path for the packaging of explosive devices operated by wireless detonators.
The young man, an electrical expert, asserted in his telephone and telematic communications that he was in the process of preparing a homemade device (of the TATP type), regarding which he asked for instructions on how to build a remote detonator, of which he acquired electronic components as well as expressed constant indoctrination to cohabiting family members including a younger brother who was only 10 years old and discussed with another adult brother, the recipient of a search, the purchase of a firearm.
Searches ordered by the Trento District Prosecutor’s Office allowed ROS Carabinieri to seize a gas mask, more than 200 units of pyrotechnic powder, as well as electronic components suitable for detecting bugs and making remote controls and micro-wiring tools in addition to computer and documentary matching material.
Today’s investigation is linked to a previous one, carried out by the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office of Bolzano, in coordination with the District Prosecutor’s Office of Trento, against the same person under investigation at the time who was a minor, at the outcome of which, because of his age he was initiated, on the instructions of the judiciary, to an educational and rehabilitative program in the context of an inter-institutional project of de-radicalization and counter-narrative, aimed at empowering risk factors in weak subjects, as an innovative frontier of countering the terrorist threat. The pathway interrupted due to the above-mentioned Covid-19 pandemic did not – at the time – achieve the desired results.
