“RAEE4Comics,” comic book writing contest for under 30s, kicks off

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “RAEE4Comics,” the new writing contest promoted by Giffoni Innovation Hub and Erion WEEE, with the media partnership of Comics&Science, a science communication series of CNR Edizioni, and dedicated to young talents under 30 with the aim of promoting the culture of environmental sustainability, circular economy and recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) through the immediate and engaging language of comics, officially kicks off.

The project invites participants to submit original subjects that tell stories of WEEE recovery, reuse and valorization. The four best selected subjects will be published (in different forms) with the support of professional cartoonists.

The language of comics was chosen for its ability to combine the visual power of images with the depth of storytelling, making the message about recycling more accessible and engaging. Moreover, comics open up potential future multimedia developments, with the possibility of adaptations in animated or film format, thus expanding the initiative’s reach and communicative impact.

The “RAEE4Comics” contest is open to all first-time authors who wish to test their creativity and sensibility. To participate, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30 and a resident of Italy. Aspiring authors are required to submit an original, unpublished subject.

The communicative effectiveness and authenticity of the proposed stories will be key elements for the selection of the best works. The goal is to enhance young people able to propose fresh and innovative ideas, able to tell in an engaging and conscious way the theme of WEEE recycling with an important focus on the raw materials contained in them.
Registration for the contest is already open and will close on April 24, 2025.

All information and the full rules are available at the official website call.giffonihub.com/raee4comics.

The submitted works will be evaluated between April and May 2025 by a jury composed of representatives from Erion WEEE, Giffoni Innovation Hub, CNR, professional cartoonists and environmental communication experts, who will decide on the four finalists of the contest. The latter will be hosted during one of the days of the Turin Book Fair (May 15/19, 2025), with travel and lodging paid for by the organization, and will participate in a training workshop sponsored by Erion WEEE with authors and illustrators from the Book Fair.

This will be followed by a phase of narrative refinement of the initial proposals, which the four finalists must deliver by June 26, 2025, for re-evaluation by the jury. Through this last phase, the overall winner of “RAEE4Comics” will be selected, who will be entitled to participate in the special event within Next Generation at the Giffoni Film Festival, scheduled for July 17-26, 2025. The winner will, in addition, be hosted, with travel and lodging paid for by the organization, at the dedicated masterclass and will have the opportunity to present their comic in front of a large audience of kids 18+.

In addition, the first runner-up will see their subject transformed into a full 16-page comic book created by CNR Edizioni’s professional cartoonists and published in the prestigious Comics&Science series. The same collection will host the other three finalist ideas that will be published as synopses illustrated by professional comic book artists.
