WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – Reverend Jesse Jackson, civil rights activist, baptist minister and twice nominee for U.S. Presidency candidacy died at 84. In a note, published by the Nbc issuer, the children recalled Jackson as “a leader in the service of the community, not only of our family, but also of the oppressed, of the voiceless and the marginalized throughout the world”. The cause of death has not yet been made known. The family said he died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.
Jackson had been admitted to the hospital in November and, according to his association, the Rainbow Push Coalition, for more than a decade lived with the progressive sopranuclear paralysis (Psp), a rare neurodegenerative disease. Jackson revealed in 2017 that he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
Many commentators saw in Jackson the continuation of Martin Luther King’s activity in favor of civil rights, especially African Americans. His activism lasted decades and included two races for the presidential candidacy with the Democrats, in 1984 and 1988. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, the Reverend was also sent special to Africa for President Bill Clinton and distinguished himself for his mediation in the liberation of many American citizens and other prisoners abroad, in countries including Syria, Cuba, Iraq and Serbia.
