Russian Hunt, Washington threatens the Algeria of sanctions

ALGERI (ALGERIA) (ITALPRESS) – Washington could impose sanctions on Algeria due to the purchase of Russian fighter aircraft. Robert Palladino, head of the U.S. Department of State Department’s Office for Near East Affairs, spoke before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee in response to a question on the subject. “We also saw these media news and are a cause of concern,” he said. “The State Department is determined to apply the law to counter America’s opponents through sanctions, and transactions like you described could lead to the activation of such measures,” added Le Matin D’Algerie.

Palladino has specified that a more detailed comparison could take place at closed doors with the members of the Senate. Palladino also answered a question about US administration initiatives to dissuade Algeria from buying Russian military equipment. “We work closely with the Algerian government on issues in which we find common ground. Of course, we disagree on many issues, and this is an example where the United States will face a challenge,” he said.

“We use the influence we have, often far from the spotlight, to promote our interests and end unacceptable behaviour,” he added. In February 2025 Algeria had announced that it would receive Russian fifth-generation Su-57 fighters, becoming the first foreign country to acquire this type of advanced military aircraft. At the time it was also indicated that Algerian pilots were in Russia for training on these aircraft.
