LONDRA (UKREGNO) (ITALPRESS) – The United Kingdom launched a serious warning to Russia after detection of the Russian ship Yantar, suspected of intelligence activities, in waters off Scotland. British Defence Minister John Healey confirmed that during the surveillance operation the ship used laser devices against RAF aircraft crews, defining it a “profoundly dangerous” behavior.
The Yantar, a 108-metre boat officially declared “Oceanographic”, according to London, serves in reality to map and monitor critical underwater infrastructure. Minister Healey explained that already for weeks the ship is “on the edge” of British waters, near the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) north of Scotland. To track his movements, the United Kingdom deployed a frigate of the Royal Navy along with RAF’s P-8A Poseidon aircraft. During these operations, according to Healey, the Yantar pointed lasers against pilots, a gesture that triggered the alarm. During a press conference on Downing Street, Healey launched a warning directed at Vladimir Putin: “See you. We know what you’re doing. And if the Yantar goes south this week, we are ready.” He also stated that the Defence Ministry activated “military options” if the ship increases its threat.
