Sapienza University in classical studies for the sixth consecutive year

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Knowledge first university in the world in Classics & Ancient History and among the first ten with Archeology and History of Art. It is the first time that an Italian university ranks with 3 subjects in the top 10 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject ranking published on 25 March. The 2026 edition of the Report confirms for the sixth consecutive year the absolute primacy of the Athenaeum in classical studies, the only world primacy for Italian universities, and rewards the humanistic field with the seventh place assigned both to the historical-artistic studies and to the archaeological ones, with Archaeology passing from 11 position to 7 and History of Arts starting from 18 to 7 .

These results – the Rector concludes – represent a tangible testimony of the constant scientific commitment, the passion and dedication of an academic community capable of preserving a millenary cultural heritage, projecting it in the future, through a research and an international didactic that permanently places it at the top of the rankings.”.

Wisdom also improves by number of disciplines placed in the Top 50 world, from 4 of 2025 to 6 of the newly released 2026 rankings; in particular they confirm Classics & Ancient History (1), Archaeology (7), History of Art (7) and Physics & Astronomy (38) and enter among the first 50 Modern Languages (42) and Pharmacy & Pharmacology (48). Among the top 100, Sapienza is first in Italy with 26 subjects; instead, for total appearances in the ranking, it is second nationally with 46 subjects. The QS class is divided into 5 broad thematic areas within which 55 subjects are considered. The ranking takes into account the following indicators: the academic reputation and that of recruiter-based companies worldwide, quotes for paper, the use of “H-Index” on the profitability of quotes and the impact of publications and finally the International Research Network IRN on co-authors of international research publications. The weight of the indicators varies by single subject and macro-area. To achieve the 2026 ranking, more than 6,277 institutions were considered, of which 1,912 found room in the ranking.
