In an increasingly global food market, regional identity can become a competitive advantage. At SIAL Paris, Sardinia is focusing on its distinctive traditional products, extensive livestock farming and a cheesemaking heritage closely tied to the island.
Which specialties have you chosen to bring to SIAL Paris?
We are showcasing our three historic cheeses with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status: Pecorino Romano, Pecorino Sardo and Fiore Sardo. They are different products, each with its own distinctive characteristics, but they all speak the same language: that of the place they come from. Extensive livestock farming is deeply rooted in Sardinia, which has more than 2.6 million sheep.
How important is SIAL in creating new business opportunities?
Our goal is to help Sardinian businesses connect with an increasingly broad market. At a time when many flavors are becoming more standardized, our cheeses offer a distinct identity and characteristics shaped by their place of origin.
How are you addressing the costs associated with being an island?
Being an island helps give us a distinctive identity, but it also brings real structural costs. One of the regional government’s priorities is to reduce their economic impact and enable Sardinian businesses to compete on equal terms.
