ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Meloni has run away again: her last appearance here was last December, she closed herself for months in an embarrassed silence but in the meantime many things have happened in Italy, in Europe and in the world and the country does not know her opinion; however, it knows that of the League, which basically commissaried Meloni today saying that she does not have the mandate to express herself tomorrow in the European Council.” This was emphasized by Pd Secretary Elly Schlein in response to the Council president’s communications in the House.
“Not a word about Paragon or Almasri, but thank you on the silence regarding the Albania model: in fact, it is no longer a model, but there is talk of innovative solutions that have, however, failed at testing,” adds Schlein, -The breaking of the truce in Gaza is very serious and we have not heard his voice condemning this action of the Israeli army, nor Netanyahu’s words that negotiations will take place under the bombs, nor Trump’s video proposing a resort for rich people where more than 45,000 Palestinians have been massacred; the best response this government could give is to fully recognize the State of Palestine; it needs the diplomatic and political commitment that has so far been lacking from the international community and the European Union.”
“Not a word even about Trump’s attacks on the EU or Ukraine, on the other hand she went to pay her respects to the Trumpian convention that was deserted even by the French far right; she did not even react when faced with the exclusion of Ukraine or the EU from the ongoing negotiations. Europe has been united in its support for Kiev and its unjustly invaded people: alongside economic and military support, diplomatic and political support is needed, we need equal unity in claiming the European role at that table to build a just peace; you cannot negotiate without Ukrainians and Europeans. Meloni has never reacted to the blackmail of Trump and Musk who have threatened to withdraw aid and satellites, indeed last week she abstained on support for Ukraine in Strasbourg so as not to offend them: Trump announces a trade war against Europe, but she instead of raising her voice against the United States takes it out on the Union,” the Dem secretary added.
“So I want to ask Meloni what interests she is following, whether those of Italy or those of her friends: she wanted to make a bridge between Trump and Europe, but instead she has already been reduced to a silent accomplice in the disintegration of the Union; none of us is thinking of renouncing relations with the United States, but in the face of insults we react and she has remained mute. This level-headed silence relegates us to the sidelines, when we should be protagonists in the European revival and the reconstruction of peace: the network of Western alliances is literally being pegged by the new axis between Trump and Putin and the nationalist right. That plan must be radically changed, because as it is presented it risks delaying the shared goal of a common defense: it does not provide for common defense investments, but for national debt and loans,” Schlein concludes.
