Schlein “Oppositions task is to build a credible alternative to government”

CERNOBBIO (COMO) (ITALPRESS) – “As oppositions we have a role not only to goad, criticize and counter government initiatives. Our role is to build a credible alternative.
This is a fundamental part of democracy.” Pd Secretary Elly Schlein said this at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio.
“We here have been talking about priorities for the country and I think we have a lot to give because this government has shown that it is unable to revive the economy. It lives on the rents and merits of others, even of the resilience of our productive world,” said Secretary Elly Schlein, on the sidelines of the proceedings of the TEHA Forum at Villa d’Este in Cernobbio.
“We need industrial policies and this government in these two years has not put any in place, it has no vision,” she stressed.
“There is growth in line with European growth. The point is to try not to be satisfied with the 1 percent figure. But above all, ask ourselves what is driving it and how we are equipping ourselves for tomorrow. There is no question that three-quarters of that growth is driven by the NRP. The Next Generation EU cannot be a window that closes under the blows of the Nazonalist right that never believed in it. Unfortunately, it is the Prime Minister’s allies who have never supported this path: with this approach of national selfishness we will go nowhere,” Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein added later in her remarks. “Businesses know that we need the Next Generation EU as an embryo of a great European industrial plan that Italy needs more than other countries. We do not have the fiscal margin of other countries to ground new strategic industrial chains,” she continued.
Together with the oppositions, “I believe and hope that there will be an opportunity to do joint work on the maneuver as well. Unfortunately, we expect that, like last year’s, it will be breathless and soulless. We want to make sure that the country is put in a position to restart. That is our primary interesting. Wages are also down, we have to deal with that as a matter of great urgency,” said Elly Schlein, on the sidelines of the proceedings. And on the discussion she had with other opposition leaders, she said, “I think some avenues for common work also emerged: public health, equal leave, industrial policy. Even with Calenda and Conte the same criticism emerged that we do: the 5.0 transition that came with enormous delay and without giving continuity. Businesses need to be able to plan, so giving continuity to those kinds of incentive mechanisms is crucial.”
And responding to reporters about the possibility of the PD voting for Raffaele Fitto as European Commissioner, he replied, “We are still waiting to understand what the portfolio will be and we have already asked the government to clarify who will follow and how they intend to follow the dossiers at this time of Fitto because they are very relevant for Italy such as the implementation of Pnrr, cohesion funds and programming. We cannot afford to slow down on this aspect. On the rest we have to evaluate what the portfolio will be and what the delegations will be. These are all hearing proceedings inside Parliament.”
