ROME (ITALPRESS) – “This is a plural and collective victory to which all progressive forces have contributed: it shows us the direction to build the alternative to the right-wingers. We knew how to win with humility and unity.” So said Pd secretary Elly Schlein in an interview with la Repubblica after the regional votes in Emilia-Romagna and Umbria, stressing how “the conspicuous decline of the governing parties should push them to question themselves on the wrong policies they are carrying out.”
For the Dem leader, “it is a truly extraordinary result that confirms us on the ground ahead of all the other parties. Everywhere there has been an impressive leap. We have a PD that alone, in Emilia-Romagna, takes more votes than the entire center-right coalition. It’s resounding stuff. The data confirm that the Pd is the linchpin in building the alternative to the right-wing. And it hands us a great responsibility, which in fact we have always exercised under the banner of maximum unity. We will continue to pursue it. The results tell us that we are on the right path: we have no presumption of self-sufficiency.”
On the risk that the M5S considers the alliance with the Pd a deadly embrace, Schlein clarifies, “Today is the day of collective and plural celebration, as our coalitions have been. Then, that the Pd historically has a greater rooting on the ground is true. But I remain confident that the generosity with which pacts were made on the territories will be the same with which we will build a broad alliance to win the government of the country tomorrow.”
