Sinner triumphs at Atp Finals, knocked out Fritz in final

TURIN (ITALPRESS) – Jannik Sinner is a prophet at home. The 23-year-old world number one tennis player from Italy won the Atp Finals, staged at Turin’s Inalpi Arena. In the grand final, the South Tyrolean defeated 27-year-old U.S. international number five Taylor Fritz with a score of 6-4 6-4.It was an unimpeachable success for the Italian, the result of five victories, three in the group, plus yesterday’s semifinal and today’s final act, all accruing in two sets. It had been since 1986 that a tennis player had not won the year-end Masters without leaving a partial on the road: the last to do so had been Ivan Lendl a good 38 years ago in fact.Incredible numbers those of Sinner, confirmed also in today’s final. De facto knocked out Fritz, beaten already in the second match of the group stage of these Finals. The San Diego tennis player, defeated by the Italian also in the final of the recent Us Open, could do nothing against the “overpowering” of the South Tyrolean, supported also by the tricolor cheer of the overflowing Turin facility. The South Tyrolean never lost his serve, strong also with 14 ace; on the other hand, he snatched the serve from the American in the seventh and decisive game of the first partial and in the fifth (and also decisive) game of the second set. The final result then was identical to that of Tuesday’s match, also against Fritz: double 6-4 in favor of Sinner, with one break per set. “Everything was great. It’s been a great week. It’s something special to win at home in front of your own audience, which is really incredible. Happy with how I handled everything and happy to share this success with the Italian fans.” So said Jannik Sinner, at the microphones of Turin’s Inalpi Arena, after today’s triumph. For the Italian, last year defeated in the final by Novak Djokovic, it is the first success in the Finals. For the South Tyrolean, who is the first Italian ever to win the “Masters,” it is the 18th title of his career, the eighth in this splendid 2024, which opened with his triumph at the Australian Open, continued with his victory at the Us Open and today’s treble, which came just days before the start of the Davis Cup Final Eight. In Málaga, from Thursday, Sinner will try to drag the Italian team to success again, as he did last year, bringing the legendary salad bowl back to Italy 47 years after the first, historic tricolor success, centered by Adriano Panatta and his teammates in 1976.- photo Ipa Agency -(ITALPRESS).
