ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Over 260 young people called to choose the most useful research for the future of agriculture, an increasingly careful agriculture to defend the health of citizens and the income of farmers. It is the challenge launched by SOIL Date – The future of the soil meets the future of agriculture, the initiative promoted by CREA and Coldiretti Giovani Impresa within the Rome Future Week, with the collaboration of SISS and IUSS.
More than 150 students from agricultural institutions and more than 100 young agricultural entrepreneurs from Coldiretti have voted in real time the innovations considered most effective to address the great challenges of agriculture: climate change, water management, soil fertility, competitiveness and sustainability of agricultural enterprises. For one morning the research came out of the laboratories to enter the fields. Five scientific projects have climbed on stage with a precise objective, to demonstrate, in a few minutes, how knowledge can turn into a competitive advantage for farms. To decree the winners were young people, called to assess the concrete impact of the solutions presented.
“The soil is not a simple agricultural fund, but a living infrastructure from which it depends more than 95% of the overall production of food and which preserves more than 90% of the biodiversity of the planet. Yet, it is a fragile resource: it can serve up to a thousand years to form a single centimeter of fertile soil and over a third of the world soils already has limitations to agricultural production,” says Andrea Rocchi, president of CREA.
“With SOIL Dates let us dialogue without filters who produces knowledge and solutions with those solutions must put them in the field already today and even more tomorrow. An ambitious goal for which I thank the President of Coldiretti Ettore Prandini, the Secretary-General of Coldiretti Vincenzo Gesmundo and the Director-General of CREA Maria Chiara Zaganelli for the profused commitment, because sustainability is built together and becomes concrete when research, school and agricultural enterprise meet”, he concludes.
