South Korea, demanded the death penalty for former President Yoon Suk Yeol

SEUL (SOUTH KOREA) (ITALPRESS) – The public prosecutor has called for the death penalty for former South Korean president, Yoon Suk Yeol, as part of the trial in Seoul that sees him charged for trying to impose martial law in the country. On 3 December 2024 the President declared the martial law on live television.

Yoon accused the main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Korea, of sympathizing with North Korea and thus conducting activities against the state. On 4 December Yoon decided to revoke martial law after a vote in that direction by Parliament. Before the revocation, however, the army had sided with Yoon against the vote of the Assembly. The episode subsequently provoked a request for impeachment by the opposition and the arrest of Yoon on January 15, 2025.

South Korea, while providing for the death penalty in its order, did not perform any capital punishment after 1997.
