Spain, clash between two high-speed trains in Andalusia: at least 39 dead

MADRID (SPAGNA) (ITALPRESS) – The collision balance in Spain is aggravated by two high-speed trains. The still provisional number of the victims is 39 dead and 73 wounded, 15 of them in life. The railway disaster occurred around 19.40 on Sunday evening near Adamuz station, in the province of Cordoba, in the Andalusia region.

A train of the private operator Iryo, departed from Malaga at 18.40 and directed to the Madrid station of Atocha with 317 passengers on board, derailed in the tail with the last three cars, invading the adjacent line on which a Renfe convoy was transiting directed to Huelva. The devastating impact also caused the derailment of the Renfe convoy. Almost completely destroyed the first two wagons of the Renfe Alvia, on which they traveled 53 of about 200 people aboard. The carriages fell along a four-metre-long pavement in a steep and difficult access area, four kilometres from the town of Adamuz.

The social images spread by the passengers immediately showed, with the desperate screams of the wounded and the wagons twisted and subsurfaced, how tragic the consequences of the disaster were. It is feared that when rescuers will be able to enter all the wagons, the budget of the victims will be aggravated. “The problem is that the wagons are completely deformed, with people inside,” explained to Spanish television the head of the firefighters of Cordoba. All roads in the area were closed to allow the arrival of emergency vehicles. The Adamuz municipal sports hall was transformed into a field hospital. The most serious injuries were transferred to the Reina Sofia hospital in Cordoba. Illysed passengers were transferred to the bus to Malaga, Seville and Cordoba. Due to the accident, the high-speed lines between Madrid and the south of Spain will remain suspended throughout the day. The causes of the derailment will be analysed by the independent commission investigating railway accidents.

The judicial inquiry was entrusted to a court in Montoro. The transport minister Oscar Puente defined the “rare and difficult to explain” incident because the railway section where it occurred is straight. The Iryo train had been on duty for four years, while the Madrid-Andalusia line had recently been renewed with works concluded in May. “It’s a dawn of deep pain for Spain,” said Premier Pedro Sanchez.
