Sports medicine, genetic screening to prevent illness on the field

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “We are in the field to prevent illnesses such as those of Fiorentina soccer player Edoardo Bove to whom all our support and closeness goes. There is also to say that despite all the efforts put into the field with genetic predictions, 20 percent of life events remain an unpredictable enigma, a real destiny.” Thus Antonio Giordano, oncologist and anatomic pathologist, president of the Sbarro Institute Temple University and creator of Sport Genomics, a precision medicine project aimed at early identification by genetic screening on saliva sample of any genetic frailties that could expose the athlete to illness and injury and also undertake a personalized training path and dietary-nutritional support. To date, more than 100 salivary samples have been collected through the collaboration with Fiorentina AC, which is currently being analyzed, and collaboration agreements have also been signed with the clubs Asti Futsal (Serie A 5-a-side soccer) and Real Società Ginnastica di Torino – basketball section – in order to expand the number of samples analyzed as much as possible. “Agreements are being finalized with Juventus FC. In addition, thanks to Cancer Deflect, also a precision medicine project, early diagnosis with long-term prognostic implementation of lung cancer can be made; this project stems from a project born a few years ago between Rigenera and the University of Siena, Prof Giordano’s lab, in order to use the HBW surgical device to identify within human lung cancer biopsies a cellular subpopulation with cancer stem characteristics that can be analyzed more thoroughly from a molecular point of view.”
