Stellantis, the Orbassano Security Centre celebrates 50 years of innovation

TORINO (ITALPRESS) – Emanuele Cappellano, COO Stellantis Enlarged Europe, visited the Security Center of Orbassano which celebrates the first 50 years of activity. Born in 1976, the Centre has grown to become one of the most accredited and comprehensive automotive safety structures in the world, thanks to advanced engineering research, technological innovation and the continuous development of new testing capabilities. The Centre is spread over a total area of 110.000 square meters and is first characterized by the presence of 4 test paths with 4 impact points for crash tests, integrated by static and dynamic testing equipment. These equipments allow an in-depth analysis of critical security scenarios, including impact with pedestrians, roof resistance and tipping behaviour, covering both the regulatory and real world conditions. A structural equipment that has few equals in the world, recently integrated by a computerized camera positioning system with 13 mobile lenses, directed towards the impact point. In addition, these tracks allow you to perform high-speed video footage of the undercar and mount up to five cameras on board the test vehicles, allowing an analysis of the crash dynamics never achieved before. This combination of physical testing and integrated digital engineering processes allows the Centre to analyze virtually any accident scenario and reproduce it accurately in the virtual environment. The result is a leading level of efficiency in the industry, both in terms of development times and resource use, while maintaining the highest standards of technical accuracy and quality of validation. As a result, the models examined in Orbassano can be certified as conforming to more than 175 technological and international safety standards, including markets operating under self-certification, where deep technical expertise and strict compliance with test procedures are essential. In addition, the Orbassano Safety Centre is equipped for tests on restraint systems such as belts and airbags, and on the individual components of the car, such as shell, doors, seats, bridge, etc. The results of these tests, as well as in terms of safety, generate certified and valuable indications also for suppliers, in support of product development and improvement. As stated by Emanuele Cappellano: “Today we are celebrating the first 50 years of activity of a structure that has dedicated its mission to safeguarding and improving the safety of the car and the protection of people. An example of excellence in research and innovation, which continues to define standards within Stellantis and throughout the industry.” The Orbassano Security Center is part of an integrated and global engineering and testing system that includes the other Security Centers in Belchamps, France, Chelsea, Michigan and Betim, Brazil.
