Tajani “A duty to strengthen defense.”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Italy is always determined to help Ukraine,” but on the 40 billion Kiev fund “there are still many questions, we will already have to invest a lot of money to comply with NATO parameters and for the von der Leyen plan and therefore an overall assessment must be made.” Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, interviewed by La Stampa, says this, saying that increasing spending to ensure Defense “is a necessity, as well as a duty imposed by the Constitution.”

“We,” he adds, “are always committed to helping Ukraine, however, we have to assess well what the costs will be, because we will also have to invest a lot of resources in order to comply with NATO parameters and for von der Leyen’s ReArm Europe plan. We have launched 11 aid packages for Ukraine and we have given all we can give. In this Foreign Affairs Council there will be a discussion that is still interlocutory, after which we will consider what to do, but after making an overall assessment together with the Minister of Defense as well.”

“We,” Tajani continued, “have always supported European positions, but we have also always reiterated that we must continue to work with the United States. Without them it is not possible to guarantee the security of Europe or Ukraine. Europe must remain united and find agreed positions, after which it is not that if one country says we must send soldiers, then everyone must do so. We have a clear position on that. Just as we have always had a clear position concerning the use of the weapons we supply to Ukraine on Russian territory.”
