Tajani “With European defense a quantum leap”

ROME (ITALPRESS) – “The changes taking place are there, and today there are the conditions, even partly obliged, to give life to that great project first of De Gasperi, then of Berlusconi and now in its broad outlines presented by von der Leyen, with our yes: a great European defense. The contingency, the U.S. pushing in this direction, gives us a great opportunity.” Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani says this in an interview with Corriere della Sera, urging not to be afraid of a strengthening of European defense, which, however, will have to take place together with the political and economic one. “We should not worry, but take care” of keeping alive the historic relationship of transatlantic alliance between the U.S. and Europe because “we are indispensable to each other,” and above all to “make the EU take a qualitative leap.”

“Now is the time,” he affirms. We need to assert our strength as the world’s first trading market, and not act defensively as if we were a terrified Don Abbondio.” “Defense,” he continues, “is peacekeeping and protection missions that serve to protect our exports. We must necessarily move toward a defense spending of 2 percent of GDP, with the separation of this spending from the Stability Pact. We will have to use a mechanism similar to the Recovery Fund, from which, however, we are not going to divert funds,” he continues.

He reiterates, “Our military will not go to the front lines in Ukraine, either with a NATO or European mission. Other would be a U.N. mission that can act as an interposition force after coming to peace.”
