Terna, with daylight saving time Italy will save about 100 million euros

ROME (ITALPRESS) – According to estimates by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity transmission grid, Italy will save about 100 million euros during the seven months of Daylight Saving Time, thanks to lower electricity consumption of about 330 million kWh, which will also generate a significant environmental benefit, quantifiable in the reduction of about 160 thousand tons of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

Daylight saving time will be in effect from Sunday, March 30, when the hands will be moved forward sixty minutes at 2 a.m., and will end on Sunday, October 26, when daylight saving time returns.

The estimated economic benefit for the daylight saving period in 2025 is calculated considering that the cost of the average kilowatt-hour for the ‘typical domestic customer under protection’ (according to ARERA data) is, for the first quarter of 2025, about 29.9 cents before taxes. The approximately 330 million kWh of lower electricity consumption is equivalent to the average annual needs of more than 125 thousand households. From 2004 to 2024, according to the analysis of the company led by Giuseppina Di Foggia, the lower electricity consumption for Italy due to daylight saving time was a total of more than 11.7 billion kWh and resulted, in economic terms, in savings for citizens of about 2.2 billion euros.
