NAPLES (ITALPRESS) – The European Court of Human Rights has condemned the Italian state for “inaction in the face of activities, often by criminal groups, to dump, bury and incinerate waste in a vast area bordering the provinces of Naples and Caserta.” The judges allegedly found a “sufficiently serious, real and ascertainable” risk to health and life, as evidenced by numbers that in recent years have documented a dramatic increase in cancer cases among citizens living in the affected area, the so-called Terra dei Fuochi. The ECHR has given Italy two years to introduce corrective measures into its legal system that can concretely address the phenomenon. The appeal before the European Court had been brought by 41 citizens and five associations from Campania.
