ROME (ITALPRESS) – The European Court’s ruling is an unequivocal indictment: the Italian state has abandoned its citizens, allowing the Terra dei Fuochi to become an open-air gas chamber. For years, those who were supposed to intervene pretended not to see, minimized, promised, and then turned away while people got sick and died. Now Europe has made clear what science has been reporting for years: this is a silent massacre and the state bears serious responsibility. It is no longer the time for excuses, postponements, the usual political dance, promises and slogans. Health is not a luxury, it is a constitutional right and those who sit in the institutions have a duty to protect it with deeds and not just words. Serious cleanups, real controls, severe punishments for those who have poisoned our land and our lives.”
This is stated by Antonio Giordano oncologist, Temple University anatomic pathologist and president of the Sbarro Institute, who first denounced the phenomenon of the land of the fires in an investigative book, “State Muck: le terre dei fuochi nell’Italia dei veleni” in which, among other things,he described the results of the scientific project “Veritas “by which he highlighted the high concentration of metals such as cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and lead in the blood of cancer patients residing in Giugliano, one of the municipalities symbolic of the environmental devastation of North Naples.
“If firm action is not taken today, tomorrow there will be another ruling, and then another. But every day of delay is measured in human lives. Today the state has a great opportunity for redemption, showing that it is on the side of the citizens and avoiding remaining complicit in the greatest environmental and health disaster in our history. ‘There is no more time. There is no more tolerance for inaction,'” Giordano concludes.
