MILAN (ITALPRESS) – State Police have detained a 19-year-old Kenyan woman accused of enlisting for the purpose of terrorism. The arrest resulted from the outcome of an investigation conducted by the Milan D.I.G.O.S. – International Counter-Terrorism Section and the Central Directorate of Prevention Police – Service for Countering Extremism and External Terrorism, which culminated, on the afternoon of Saturday, Nov. 30, when the young woman was stopped at Orio al Serio Airport (BG) as she was about to board a flight bound for Turkey, a country identified as a transit point for reaching Middle Eastern war theaters.
The investigation, launched last October, stemmed from the constant monitoring of radical jihadist circles online, which led to the identification of an open social video sharing profile in which propaganda videos with radical content were being posted with increasing intensity in which a woman wearing a niqab was portrayed, later identified as the young Kenyan woman who was apprehended.
Further in-depth investigations carried out by the DIGOS of the Milan Police Headquarters revealed that the same woman, already a guest at a host community and coming from a difficult family background, was maturing on a rapid path of ideological-religious radicalization resulting, in the last period, in her intention to reach Turkey and then settle in areas occupied by jihadist formations. In this regard, technical activities have returned evidence of several contacts of the young woman with telephone users attested in the Middle East, likely traceable to individuals who would have favored her arrival.
The planning of the arrested woman, who had already repeatedly attempted to contact Turkish diplomatic representations in Italy, was further accelerated in recent days when, after repeatedly consulting flight sites for Turkey, she twice went to Malpensa (VA) airport to obtain a one-way ticket to Istanbul, succeeding in the late afternoon of November 29 when she purchased a flight departing from Orio al Serio (BG).
In light of this latest finding, the judicial authority issued the detention order against the young woman, which was executed immediately after she was stopped by Milan police officers at the Orobic air terminal, as soon as she checked in and practically at the moment of baggage boarding. The woman claimed to be muhajirat, “the migrant”-in addition to having developed an interest in using firearms-was actually in contact with a man in Turkey who was waiting for her upon arrival.
