ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The parliament of the Republic of Bulgaria approved on 29 January the bilateral agreement with Italy for the construction and joint use of military structures in the Kabile district, near the town of Yambol, intended to host a multinational NATO contingent and to strengthen the capacity to deterrence and defense on the eastern side of the Atlantic alliance.
The document, signed on 23 December 2025 by the respective ministers of Defense, Guido Crosetto for Italy and Atanas Zapryanov for Bulgaria, was ratified with the support of the main Bulgarian parliamentary forces and represents a “strategic step” aimed at consolidating the allied military presence in a geographically crucial area for European security.
The new installation will rise in the military zone of Kabile, where for years there has been a concentration of military and logistic-addestrative infrastructures, including the nearby Bezmer aerial base, nodal points for the rapid deployment of large-scale forces. According to the Bulgarian authorities, the base will consolidate the logistics and operational support of the Multinational Battlegroup in Bulgaria, NATO tactical group that Italy has led since 2022 under the initiative “Enhanced Vigilance Activity” (eVA), designed to increase the deterrence of the Alliance after Russian aggression to Ukraine.
The agreement follows the strengthening of the Italian presence in Bulgaria under the eVA initiative, in which the Italian Army has assumed the role of framework nation for the battlegroup from 17 October 2022, contributing with an organic contingent, control structures and joint training activities with allied forces. This role of leadership, formally recognized by NATO, has been reiterated by official acts of the Italian Ministry of Defence and witnesses the direct contribution of Rome to the common security and the operational preparation of the forces on the south-eastern European theatre.
