ROMA (ITALPRESS) – ‘The other Garibaldi. The “diaries” of Caprera’, is the book, published by Mondadori, with which Virman Cusenza, tells aspects of the personality of the Italian patriot, military and political. The book was presented in the Sala Alessandrina dell’Archivio di Stato in Corso del Rinascimento, Rome. In addition to the author of the event, the former President of the Council, Massimo D’Alema, and the journalist and writer, Marcello Veneziani, moderated by journalist Giovanna Pancheri.
“When I first went to Caprera I discovered an eco-sustainable Garibaldi. In the sense that he understood before the time that only a harmonious relationship with nature could give him that dna he then spent during his civil life. The Garibaldi lover of nature, farmer, breeder and lover of animals, and also of women, appearance seen in its best light, makes it a person who had a ductility and a capacity to embrace the world that lasts until today” as “is still a popular character”. These are the author’s considerations.
“Garibaldi has become an archetype of our modern and contemporary history of what can be if it adheres to nature in its entirety,” so it is “a man who was not the son of books, political experiences, party sections or even of Masonry meetings he belonged to.”.
Because “he understood that the relationship with nature and animals was a code that was extended to all levels of society.” The retreat on the island of Caprera, after an broken dream, without a rival bike, shows something more than the person of Garibaldi: “I think he had obvious fragility and it is also one of the reasons why I fell in love with the idea of writing this book. He had a sensitivity almost as a poet, so much so that he illusions to be and writes poems.” “My destiny has always been to fight for a cause and then to see me shatter the fruit of conquest to things done.”.
Thus Cusenza mentions the thought of the patriot and military, recalling what happened with the successes in Uruguay, with the Mille a Teano, in Bezzecca, up to Parliament. “It is an idealist and generous. He wouldn’t have done the businesses he did if he hadn’t thrown his heart out of the obstacle. It is clear that it was a naive.” But he added, “Garibaldi oscillates in the awareness of a great charism and its inadequacy in governing.”.
“This book offers us a point of view on Garibaldi very interesting, rich for its human components. The book is not on Garibaldi in Caprera but seen from Caprera. That is the basis from which he continues to play a political role, of military leader, of great personality, symbol of a humanitarian, socialist vision. Garibaldi represents an Italian tradition, that is, that of a betrayed revolution. What is repeated in the history of Italy. And he lives the last years with the disappointment of this united Italy for which he has made a huge personal contribution that seems to betray the best ideals of the Risorgimento”, says D’Alema, who adds: “It is clear that it belongs to the history of all Italians, but it is also true that it was a man of the left. Not because this self is appropriate but because he has placed himself in the historical and international left. It was his free choice. He was a man of the left animated by a great political realism. This is one of the reasons why he appreciated another man of the left animated by great political realism, Palmiro Togliatti”.
D’Alema also highlights the patriot, military and political its “ cosmopolitan dimension which is a part of the best Italians. We are a cosmopolitan people.” The former president of the Council also exalts the “modernity” of the military and political “in the way he managed his own image. It is a lesson that projects him far beyond his time.” Antonio Tarasco, General Manager Archivi of the Ministry of Culture and also a great-grandson of Giuseppe Garibaldi.
