The direct impact of tourism consumption generates 106.8 billion GDP

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In 2023 the direct impact of tourism consumption generates 106.8 billion GDP, which becomes 206,4 billion if we consider also the indirect effects that are measured for the first time with the Satellite Account presented in an Istat Report.

Employment in the tourist industries absorbs 14.4% of the working positions of the total economy, while income from employees paid amounts to 76 billion euros (9.3% of the total). The average labour productivity in the tourist industry (99,015 euros) is 30% lower than the average in the country. Per capita income (17,709 euros) is also less than 35% compared to the national average.

In Spain the direct and indirect effect of tourism is 12.3% of GDP. The tourist balance is confirmed in advance both for Italy (+26.6 billion euros) and, to a greater extent, for Spain (+74.5 billion), the difference is attributable mainly to the greater tourist expenses abroad of the Italians. The estimates of the Satellite Account of Tourism 2023 (CST2023) introduce some significant innovations and improvements of methods and sources and incorporate the results of the general revision of the national accounts of September 2024, therefore the results produced are not comparable with the previous editions of the CST for Italy.

In particular, starting from this edition of the CST in addition to the direct impact of tourism consumption, expressly provided by the Account, is also measured the indirect one, that is that activated by the tourist demand on other economic sectors. In 2023 the tourist flows in Italy amounted to 777 million between overnight stays and hikers. Although constantly resumed after the collapse in 2020, the flows still do not reach the levels of 2019, last year of reference before the pandemic, but also, it should be emphasized, year in which the tourist flows recorded a peak.

In 2023 domestic tourism consumption in Italy is estimated at 202,7 billion euros at current prices. The prevailing part is attributed to the expense of domestic visitors (40.7% of the total), while non-residents feed a quota of 37.5%. These two components, domestic and inbound spending, account for 78.3% of domestic tourist consumption. Other components, including the use of second holiday homes and business trips, represent the remaining 21.7% of the tourist demand. In 2023 the gross domestic product attributed to the tourist sector and directly stimulated by the domestic tourist consumption amounted to 106.8 billion euros at current prices (5% of the total).

If, however, the effects indirectly exerted by tourism demand on other productive sectors are also considered, the overall estimate rises to 206,4 billion, reaching 9.6% of GDP.

In 2023, more than 4 million jobs were allocated in the tourist industry, 14.4% of the total economy. Altogether, the Alloggio, Ristorazione e del Commercio industries are considered to absorb more than 80% of all the working positions employed by the tourist industry. From CST 2023, the income of employees paid by the tourist industry is estimated. These amount to EUR 76.5 billion (9.3% of total).

The tourist demand, i.e. the whole of tourism spending, is characterized in Italy by a strong domestic component, i.e. activated for various reasons (holidays, work, etc.) by residents. The tourist expenditure of visitors resident in 2023 to 82.5 billion euros at current prices and feeds 52% of the internal tourist expenditure. If it is considered that the other components of tourist consumption are almost entirely attributable to the resident visitors, the share of this to the determination of the total tourist demand rises to 62.5% (126,6 billion). Inbound expenditure, i.e. foreign spending in our country, amounted in 2023 to 76.1 billion euros and represents 37.5% of domestic tourism consumption.

Tourist revenue due to inbound tourist flows (76.1 billion) is higher than tourist outputs due to the flows of Italians outside – outbound – (49.4 billion), resulting in a positive balance. The same happens if it is considered the total tourist expenditure of the Italians, which consists of domestic spending (82.5 billion) and that carried out abroad (49.4 billion) and whose balance is of positive sign. Of particular importance, among the items of expenditure, the product of Shopping that, in 2023, amounts to more than 38 billion euros at current prices, representing 19% of the entire tourist consumption and placing itself among the main items of expenditure.

It remains a characteristic element of Italian tourism the use in its own for tourist purposes of the second houses, whose residential services charged are estimated in 2023 in 18,3 billion euros.
