‘The Divine Comedy Opera Musical’ to debut in China

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Culture is once again confirmed as a vehicle for dialogue and connection between peoples. “The Divine Comedy Opera Musical,” the theatrical colossal produced by MIC International Company, is about to cross national borders with an ambitious international tour. Starting today, the opera will make its debut in China, touching 15 major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, in collaboration with We Opera Studio Limited. An extraordinary event, presented in the prestigious Loggia del Primaticcio of Palazzo Firenze, headquarters of the Dante Alighieri Society, in Rome.

Present were Francesco and Leonardo Gravina, producers of the show for MIC International Company, director and author of the texts Andrea Ortis together with Gianmario Pagano, and composer Marco Frisina. Introducing the event was the secretary general of the Dante Alighieri Society, Alessandro Masi, testifying to the institution’s constant support for a cultural initiative of international significance.

“In a historical period marked by geopolitical tensions and increasing polarization, culture asserts itself as a tool for encounter and mutual understanding,” it was stressed. Bringing ‘The Divine Comedy Opera Musical’ to China is not only an artistic achievement, but also an opportunity for dialogue between two millennia-old civilizations. Dante’s masterpiece, with its powerful narrative and universal themes of justice, redemption and human destiny, crosses temporal and geographical boundaries, bringing seemingly distant cultures closer together. The encounter with the Chinese philosophical and literary tradition opens new perspectives for reflection and exchange, reaffirming the value of culture as a means of bringing East and West closer together. Following Marco Polo’s legacy, MIC International Company chooses to undertake this journey with the same spirit of discovery and wonder, bringing to the East one of the most representative works of Italian heritage.”

Directed by Andrea Ortis, with texts edited by Ortis himself together with Gianmario Pagano and music by Marco Frisina, “La Divina Commedia Opera Musical” stands out for its impressive stage design. Thanks to the use of immersive 3D projections, the show transports the audience to the evocative atmospheres of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise, offering an immersive experience capable of captivating spectators of all ages.

Recognized with prestigious awards, including the Gold Medal of the Dante Alighieri Society and the title of Best Musical at the 2019 and 2020 Persephone Awards, the opera has been an extraordinary success in past Italian theater seasons. Now, with its international debut, it is preparing to win over Asian audiences as well. “The performance of the ‘Divine Comedy’ in China,” it was pointed out during the presentation, “is not limited to the artistic dimension, but takes on a deeper meaning: it is an opportunity to foster cultural exchange and academic dialogue between Italy and China. The Chinese theatrical tradition, with its ancient roots and modern forms of stage expression, will be able to interact with Western theatrical language, generating new artistic and interpretative contaminations. In an age marked by divisions and conflicts, theater, music and dance become instruments of unity, capable of conveying universal messages and building bridges where politics and economics often raise barriers. ‘The Divine Comedy Opera Musical’ is confirmed not only as a great show, but as a gesture of trust in the transformative power of art.”
