The EU’s distance from the US is growing, for 64% of Europeans the Trump judgment is negative

BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) (ITALPRESS) – The distance and skepticism towards the United States is growing in European public opinion. This is what emerges from the last EuroScope survey of Polling Europe, conducted between 30 January and 9 February 2026 on a representative sample of 5,273 European citizens. The most obvious is the evaluation of President Donald Trump. Almost two Europeans out of three (64%) express a negative judgment, attributing an average vote of 3.1 on a scale from 0 to 10. At the same time, only 25% assigns a positive judgment. However, there are some differences between the different states: in France the judgement towards Trump is worse (73%), followed by Italy (71%), while in Poland the percentage drops to 48%. Differences that, then, are also noticed by looking at the division by voter, grouped for the different European families. The voters of the parties included in The Left and S&D the most negative (82%), while in ECR the positives prevail (49%) compared to negatives (34%). This distance is also reflected in the overall perception of the United States as a partner of the European Union. Only 25% of respondents today consider the USA a “friend” country from the political and economic point of view. A significantly lower percentage than other international players such as the United Kingdom (61%) or Japan (60%), who enjoy a higher level of trust, but also behind China (27%).

The American figure, moreover, is in sharp decline since 2024, where Europeans who believed the USA a “friend” country were 61%. Here too, great geographical differences emerge: Poland has the highest percentage (40%). For Italians, Japan is the most “friend” country in the EU (60%), and the United States stops at 22%. Finally, the ongoing conflict between Washington and Brussels is critically interpreted by the European public. If 47% believe that this is a difficult phase to close with the end of the Trump Presidency, a four-five European (25%) speaks openly of a “historical rotation of the Atlantic Alliance” and a structural change in the relations between the two shores of the Atlantic. Only 18% consider the current tensions a normal dynamic of international relations. Methodology The survey was carried out by Polling Europe with CAWI methodology (Computer Assisted Web Interview) on a representative sample of the adult population of the European Union (27 countries), for a total of 5,273 complete interviews collected between 30 January and 9 February 2026.
