The importance of oral hygiene, a healthy mouth guarantees a better quality of life

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – The health of the mouth is fundamental for general well-being and longevity: teeth, gums and tissues of support are in fact closely linked to the rest of the organism and can indicate the occurrence of even important diseases. Good oral cavity health allows for effective chewing, indispensable for proper digestion and nutrient absorption: Moreover, numerous studies have shown that chronic gum disease, and especially periodontitis, are associated with an increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke. From the point of view of psychological and social well-being, a healthy mouth significantly affects the quality of life: the smile, the ability to speak without difficulty and the absence of pain contribute to self-esteem, interpersonal relationships and active participation in social life. “Food is very important for oral cavity health: when there is a deficiency for example of vitamin D wound healings in the cable worsen”, says Giulio Rasperini, associate professor of Dentistry Disciplines of the University of Milan interviewed by Marco Klinger for Top Medicine, TV format of the Italpress press agency.

“Parodontology has made huge progress in preserving teeth and tissues of support to them: there are two parallel paths, the one that allows us to save the teeth and tissues lost and the other that leads to remove the teeth to put the implants; in reality the possibility of saving the teeth is there, it makes much more sense to preserve the natural ones,” he adds. Fundamental not to underestimate oral hygiene: when it is optimal, explains Rasperini, “it allows us to preserve our teeth and keep the inflammations far away: the difficult is to find that balance in which the bacterial biofilm is removed without causing damage. If you brush too much you create gum recessions, in this sense it is better to bet on the selected electric brushes: all studies have shown that these have had a good impact. Oral hygiene techniques have also changed: in the past we removed the tartar with iron and steel tools, then we switched to ultrasound and now we arrived at the Air-Flow or warm water, which are not so disagent for patients.”.

The most dangerous foods, he adds, “are those sweet and sticky, among them also some gaseous drinks, while the best ones are the most natural: the Mediterranean diet is also much better for the oral cable. The teeth are not distributed in the same way: in general to ensure that the papilla between a tooth and the other is not crushed is better to use the thread, while if there are spaces between the teeth you can use the scovolino. The hygienist is the suitable person to advise each patient how to move: the slide tends to lower the contact point, but if for example there is a implant with the bridge prosthetic part you have to use it”. The demands for most interventions, says the teacher, “regard the aesthetic part: when a smiling person realizes that something is not going to improve that situation, but in order to do it there must be no inflammation and an ad hoc preparation to do reconstruction. Where the tooth comes out you can regenerate the tissues that create the attack near the tooth: this is possible thanks to biological agents, such as gels and growth factors, while for the reconstruction of the bone or organ there are precise techniques”.

Rasperini concludes with a reflection on the possible paths to undertake in the dental landscape: “Part of colleagues chose the path of implantology, but first you have to try to save the salvageable: It’s a fantastic technique, but you don’t always have to remove your teeth to put the implants. Our goal should be to maintain healthy patients with proper nutrition, proper hygiene and a correct lifestyle: this prolongs existence and makes it better, or at the limit makes the last period of life satisfactory. Some bacteria from the oral cable enter the body and can condition the heart valves: there are also studies that link oral cavity problems to so many systemic diseases, such as diabetes and Alzheimer’s.”.
