ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Ministry of the University and Research has published the call PRIN 2026 – Projects of significant national interest, the first action of the new three-year research plan. Wanted by the Minister of the University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, the Plan introduced, for the first time, certain times for the bands, a single fund and stable resources for universities and research institutions. The total amount is 260 million.
The call PRIN 2026 finances three-year fundamental research projects, characterized by high scientific quality and realized in a collaborative form between universities, public research bodies and AFAM institutions – High Artistic, Musical and Coreutical Formation – promoting interactions between institutions and the circulation of skills. The aim is to strengthen the national research system and promote scientific excellence, while at the same time promoting mobility and integration of skills on the territory.
The 2026 notice encourages, in fact, the creation of larger research groups than the past, providing that projects are developed by partnerships composed of a minimum of four to a maximum of six research units belonging to different universities, institutions or institutions.
For the first time, the call also enables researchers and young scholars not belonging to the head institution to be involved in the same research groups, strengthening the focus on the project and promoting the circulation of skills.
The total budget amounted to approximately 260 million, with a share of 15% of the total devoted to projects submitted by researchers under 40 years of age at the date of publication of the call. This category also includes derogations at age limits, in case of maternity leave, paternity and long-term diseases, which align Italy to European standards in selection procedures.
The call for financing between 1 and 1.2 million for each project. Proposals can cover all research sectors which can be traced to the three defined macrosectors of the European Research Council (ERC): life science, physical sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities.
The procedure for submitting applications will be open from 15.00 on 17 April 2026 and will close at 15.00 on 1 June 2026. By 30 April there will be two more innovative proposals for funding research projects, PRIN Hybrid and Synergy Grant.
