ROME (ITALPRESS) – Ahead of the European launch of the new smart #5, the vehicle recently completed rigorous winter testing in northern Europe. Traveling more than 3,000 kilometers from Mora (Sweden) to Karasjok (Norway) and Rovaniemi (Finland), the smart Europe R&D team, together with colleagues from smart China, subjected three prototypes of the new all-electric SUV to extreme tests, facing some of the harshest weather conditions in Europe.
The goal was simple but critical: to ensure that the new smart #5 was fully ready for everyday use by European customers in all conditions. To achieve this goal, the vehicle underwent extensive testing on three key aspects. The first aspect analyzed was the vehicle’s behavior on snowy and icy roads.
Even in the rear-wheel-drive version, the #5 smart impressed the team with its stability and ease of maneuvering on slippery surfaces. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), combined with a precise steering system, ensured a safe and maneuverable driving experience, improving vehicle control even in the most extreme conditions.
Passenger comfort is essential, especially in subzero temperatures. The smart #5 underwent extensive testing of the heating, ventilation, defrosting and demisting systems. Even when exposed to temperatures as low as -26°C, the vehicle’s heating system performed excellently, ensuring a comfortable passenger compartment at all times. In addition, the ventilation and defrosting systems demonstrated great efficiency, quickly clearing windows and ensuring optimal visibility throughout the journey.
One of the most critical aspects of the tests involved battery performance in subzero temperatures. As expected in extreme conditions, power consumption increased, but the 800V battery technology, combined with the pre-conditioning system, enabled efficient charging even in the coldest weather. Pre-conditioning of the battery prior to recharging proved critical to ensure a smooth and efficient charging process, even in remote locations.
Test Conclusions The winter test by the smart Europe R&D team showed that the new smart #5 is ready to tackle any driving condition. Its stability on challenging roads, fast and efficient charging performance, and guaranteed passenger comfort in any situation confirm that the latest model in the 100% electric range fully meets the needs of European customers.
With its debut in European markets scheduled for summer 2025, the new smart #5 is set to be the brand’s most versatile and resilient vehicle yet, offering a smooth and enjoyable driving experience all year round.
