The opening ceremony of Milan-Cortina 2026 at the UN Glass Palace

On the initiative of the Permanent Representation of Italy at the United Nations in New York, the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina 2026 was also broadcast live at the Palazzo di Vetro. Numerous delegates from the United Nations, UN officials, journalists, have followed with interest the images projected on the telescopes set up in the iconic Delegates Lounge, located near the General Assembly, where last November 19 the Resolution on the Olympic Truce facilitated by Italy was approved.

Speaking a few minutes before the beginning of the ceremony, the Vice Permanent Representative of Italy at the United Nations, Gianluca Greco, underlined the commitment of the Italian Government and the Farnesina, under the impetus of the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, to facilitate the compact support of the UN member countries to the Resolution on the Olympic Truce, support translated, however, in the 165 co-sponsorations received. Greek recalled the shortened appeal of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to respect the truce, to stop arms and to promote the role and values of sport for peace and mutual understanding.

The UN Secretary-General of the United Nations for Global Communications, Melissa Fleming, has taken part in renouncing the participation in the opening ceremony of the Games in Milan and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock.

During the event, enriched by the presence of the two torches, Olympic and Paralympic, made available to the Italian Representation to the UN by the Fondazione Milano-Cortina, a video message was also broadcast by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry.
