Thirteen transplants performed in four days at Bari Polyclinic

BARI (ITALPRESS) – Marathon of transplants at the Bari Polyclinic. From March 11 to 14, 13 transplants were performed. Several highly specialized medical teams operated in Asclepios operating rooms: cardiac surgery, headed by Professor Tommaso Bottio, performed three heart transplants; hepatobiliary surgery, led by Professor Francesco Tandoi, performed six liver transplants; while urology, under the direction of Professor Pasquale Ditonno, completed three single kidney transplants and one double kidney transplant.

“Bari Polyclinic’s transplant teams have proven in the past that they are ready to handle complex situations. On this occasion, in addition to coordinating two organ donations directly in our resuscitations, cardiac surgeons traveled to Palermo and Nocera Inferiore to perform the harvests. This extraordinary team of professionals, with commitment and passion, continues to raise the standards of our University Hospital. Thanks to the dedication and professionalism of all the staff, thirteen patients with organ failure have been given new hope for life,” explained the general director of the Bari Polyclinic, Antonio Sanguedolce.

“A particularly significant aspect of this series of interventions is that 90 percent of the donations came from Puglia, with organs taken from centers in Bari, Brindisi, Lecce and the Miulli Hospital in Acquaviva. And on the same days thanks to these donors, the kidney transplant center at the Foggia Polyclinic also performed two transplants,” highlights Professor Loreto Gesualdo, coordinator of the Regional Transplant Center.

“This figure is an important sign of the growth of the regional transplant network, in which we are investing heavily as the Regional Transplant Center. Special thanks must be given to the donors and their families, whose gesture of generosity is crucial to continuing to save lives, and to all the professionals, women and men, of the transplant network who never spared themselves and worked around the clock,” Professor Gesualdo concludes.
