WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – The first meeting of the Board of Peace will be held today in Washington to promote the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip created by US President Donald Trump. The meeting will take place after more than four months from the entry into force of the ceasefire in Gaza, on 10 October, in the context of the questions on the acceptance by Hamas of disarmament and the consent of Israel to a further withdrawal from the Strip, so that the planned reconstruction can proceed.
Board of Peace members met last month in Switzerland for a signature ceremony at the edge of the World Economic Forum. Around 50 countries will be present in Washington today, including Israel, which will participate with foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Qatar and others who will send foreign ministers or another high-level member of the government. The Palestinian National Authority (Anp) of President Mahmoud Abbas was not invited.
The chief commissioner of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (Ncag), Ali Shaath, the body that will have to manage the transition to Gaza, according to Trump’s plan. The Palestinian technocrats committee in Shaath has the task of replacing Hamas in Gaza, but the Ncag has not yet entered the Strip, and the High Representative for Gaza of the Board of Peace, Nikolaj Mladenov, has declared that we cannot enter if the violations of ceasefire persist.
Some European countries, including Italy, will participate in today’s session as observers, report the media. Trump said on Sunday that over $5 billion in humanitarian and reconstruction efforts will be announced at today’s meeting. The Times of Israel newspaper revealed last week that among the main financiers there would be Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and the United States, each with a contribution of over 1 million dollars. Trump also stated on Sunday that the countries that have agreed to contribute thousands of men to the International Stabilisation Force will be announced during today’s meeting.
