Tourist submarine sinks in Egypt, six dead among Russian passengers

THE CAIRO (EGYPT) (ITALPRESS) – At least six people dead and nine injured is the toll from an accident in Egypt’s Red Sea off Hurghada where a tourist submarine sank. Rescue teams managed to save 29 people on board. Nine people injured in the accident, including four in critical condition, were transferred to hospitals in Hurghada for treatment and first aid.

The Russian Consulate General in Hurghada reported that a total of 45 Russian tourists, including children, were on board. The incident, again according to the consulate, occurred 1 km from the coast.

Meanwhile, sources told Al Arabiya that Hurghada’s governor, Major General Amr Hanafi, visited the crash site and requested a detailed report on the causes of the submarine’s sinking. In turn, Tourism Minister Sherif Fathy gave direct instructions to ensure that all medical supplies are provided to all the injured.

A technical committee was also formed to thoroughly investigate the causes and review the submarine’s maintenance records. The name of the submarine vessel was Sindbad and it was on a sea voyage to inspect the coral reefs under the waters of the Red Sea in Hurghada.
