VENICE (ITALPRESS) – “The Veneto region is generous and altruistic, we have recognized this through the previous information campaign “Generous, the Veneto,” and now it is time to take up the themes to raise awareness of the importance of donation, which is exercised through the manifestation of the will.” With these words, Veneto Region Health Councillor Manuela Lanzarin presents the new social campaign prepared by CRT Veneto aimed at raising awareness of organ and tissue donation. And in fact, the social campaign 2025, supporting the spread of the culture of organ and tissue donation through posts, interactive stories and videos, will start in a few days.
The objectives of this project include, in addition to the activity related to raising awareness among the population, the training activity related to the organization and delivery of in-person training days dedicated to the operators of the registry offices of the municipalities to which citizens can go to express their willingness to donate organs and tissues after death at the time of issuing/renewing their identity card. This year, the first of these training courses was held at the Municipality of Sona (VR) on February 27, where 23 operators took part.
“The topic is as important as it is delicate,” recalls Councillor Lanzarin, “the existence of an expression of will on donation is an act of generosity and awareness, and it is desirable to take a position on it so as not to leave this decision to loved ones. The choice can be reviewed at any time, either way, it is important to discuss it and inform loved ones of the choice made.” This is also why CRT Veneto wanted to make its information materials accessible not only in Italian, but also in English, Arabic and Chinese in order to be able to spread information about organ and tissue donation to as many people as possible. This campaign is part of a path of synergistic collaboration to spread the culture of donation between CRT Veneto, AIDO Veneto, ANCI Veneto, Federsanità/ANCI Veneto Federation, ANUSCA Veneto and the National Transplant Center.
The year 2024 for the Regional Transplant System was a year of confirmation and places Veneto as a reference on the national scene in terms of donation and transplantation. Although there was a slight decrease compared to 2023 in terms of potential donors and transplants of solid organs from deceased donors, the trend in procurement and transplant activity compared to previous years is steadily increasing, and the Veneto Region remains at the top nationally in terms of the number of transplants performed.
Substantially contributing to the achievement of these good results in 2024 is the sharp increase in the number of potential “heart-stopping” organ donors (DCDs) compared to 2023, which in the Veneto region registers an increase of 74.3% and has made possible a high number of transplants. In 2024, opposition to donation detected in intensive care units remains steadily below the national average, and down from 2023, while the percentage of opposition recorded at municipalities when the Electronic Identity Card is issued increases slightly, still remaining below the national average.
The difference in the percentage of opposition detected in the Intensive Care Unit compared to that recorded at the Municipalities is due to the sensitivity of the citizens of Veneto and the great work done by the volunteers of AIDO and the operators of the Regional Transplantation System in the area of organ and tissue donation culture in the population. Confirming the trend of citizens’ willingness to donate in the Veneto region is the large number of tissue donors, which has been growing steadily over the past three years.
