Treccani turns 100, Mattarella visits Encyclopedia Institute

ROME (ITALPRESS) – Founded on Feb. 18, 1925, thanks to the initiative of Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri and Giovanni Gentile, the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani was established with the mission of creating, updating, publishing and disseminating the Italian Encyclopedia of Sciences, Letters and Arts. The Institute, which celebrates on Feb. 21 its 100 years of knowledge in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, after a century is still a multidisciplinary point of reference of Italian excellence that accompanies the history of our country and bears witness to its cultural identity; a multifaceted reality projected into the future, thanks to an innovative cross-media model that rests on a unique cultural heritage of letters, history, language, art, science, music, sports and traditions. Above all, Treccani is a large community of people who dedicate their efforts to sharing knowledge and fostering active participation, with a responsibility to enhance an invaluable humanistic and scientific heritage.
“The Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani,” said the president of the Istituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani, Carlo Ossola, “celebrates a century of activity during which it has produced works of great cultural value, with the contribution of eminent scholars, scholars of the nation and international research. Our history shows how important it is to be able to count on an authoritative community of intellectuals, which over the course of these decades has produced not only the volumes we browse through on the shelves at home or in libraries, but also a verified and continuously updated digital reference platform. Treccani’s commitment to the dissemination of knowledge is a response to the urgently needed demand for an authoritative reference point to orient us in a complex and fragmented world. I address special thanks to all the employees, staff and collaborators who have ensured an essential contribution to the success of the Encyclopedia and to the enrichment of a publishing catalog that represents a fundamental resource of Italy’s cultural heritage.”
The director general, Massimo Bray, said he was “particularly proud to be able to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani, which has played a very important role in the education of entire generations, and has been able to provide indispensable tools for the knowledge and interpretation of the main events that have characterized this century. The Treccani has represented and still represents one of the most relevant cultural symbols of the country and has managed to keep up with the great changes in technology and learning modes by offering, in addition to volumes in paper format, also a digital consultation platform, today at the forefront of the information scene. It is also thanks to this multichannel offer that the Treccani Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia, on the strength of its unquestionable prestige, can today look to the future with great optimism, aware that in this world that is difficult to interpret there is a growing demand for certified and quality knowledge, which is the fundamental characteristic of Treccani, a synonym for excellence since time immemorial.” Today, Treccani is projected into the future thanks to a universe of activities ranging from the Web – with the portal treccani.it portal that boasts over a million page views a day and social profiles that, aggregating data from all Treccani-branded realities, count on about a million followers – to the training courses promoted by Treccani Accademia, to the digital school of Italian for foreigners with Giulia by Treccani, to the Treccani Libri series, to the exclusive cultural itineraries curated by Treccani Esperienze, to the school publishing of Treccani Scuola Editrice, to the content and platforms for the world of education with Edulia, to the research projects on Italy’s intangible cultural heritage. A sales network operating throughout Italy through 17 agencies dedicated to the sale of valuable works and volumes, a school and master class in cultural writing, and magazines on geopolitics, culture and current affairs complete the offer of a unique cultural institution in our country, recognized as being of national interest.
An imaginary museum to learn about Treccani, a galaxy of knowledge that promotes and stimulates comparisons and dialogues and provides useful tools to better understand the complexity of the world around us and the concept of culture. This is the “Palazzo Treccani” exhibition, on display in Rome at the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia until April 30, and inaugurated today with an institutional event in the presence of President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. A tribute to the Institute’s 100th anniversary, the “Palazzo Treccani” exhibition is a journey of discovery of Treccani: an institution serving the culture and history of Italy since 1925, a galaxy of knowledge that supports and encourages discussion and dialogue among people, institutions, entities and communities. The exhibition, curated by the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia and designed by Dotdotdotdot with the support of MiC Ministero della Cultura, ICAR Istituto Centrale per gli Archivi and partner Intesa Sanpaolo, is an open and accessible place of culture, a polyform and polyphonic space that promotes the active participation of visitors through physical spaces inspired by historical palaces, expanded and amplified digitally to accompany the discovery of a priceless heritage that is constantly expanding and updating. Where culture and technology go hand in hand in order to narrate a world in perpetual evolution and change. Texts, images, videos, objects and works dialogue and interact with visitors by retracing the history of the Institute founded by Giovanni Treccani, narrating its present and imagining, as far as possible, its future. The first unveiled rooms of this palace in the making, housed inside Palazzo Mattei di Paganica until April 30, are the gallery and the studiolo. The journey into knowledge begins here.
