ROMA (ITALPRESS) – With an inflation now under control, maximum employment and a greater disposable income, household consumption – which between 2019 and 2025 remained weak growing only by 0.8% – could increase in December, thanks also to the good sales trend during the Black Week (€5 billion turnover, +20% compared to last year): In fact, the tredicesime mountain destined for consumption for the last month of the year will be pairs to 49,9 mld of euros (+2,4 mld regarding 2024), with an average expenditure for consumption of 1.964 euros per family (+53 euros regarding 2024).
This greater share of consumption, however, will move only in small part in an increase of spending for Christmas gifts that remains substantially in line with that of last year (211 euro per capita against 210 euro), because, in addition to the witches, the Italians will think a little more to themselves ‘regalandosì a new appliance, going more often to restaurant, cinema, theater or visiting a museum and devoting more to staff.
In any case, the total expense for gifts this year will be 10.1 billion – the highest figure since 2020 – but above all will be more gifts than last Christmas: climbs, in fact, to 81.5% (from 79.9% of last year) the percentage of those who will dedicate themselves to this rite and, while diminishing the people who plan to spend a Christmas dismissed (from 77.1% to 72.7%), are increasingly numerous people who will face this spending with pleasure (from 44.4% to 47.8%) confirming, therefore, the ‘magià of the Christmas holidays. These, in summary, are the main results of the analysis of the Confcommercio Study Office on the thirteenth and consumption of December.
“The fundamental good of our economy and the awakening of consumption authorise a cautious optimism for Christmas expenses – says Confcommercio’s president, Carlo Sangalli –. To consolidate this trend, concrete signs are needed. We therefore ask the Government to detax contractual increases, even for the most representative contracts involving more than five million tertiary and tourism workers.”.
The estimate of this traditional additional income in the last month of the year comes from the national accounting data periodically spread by ISTAT and those of the different pension management of the INPS. This year the total amount of the net tredices stood at 57.4 billion euros. Once the provisions are removed to meet the deadlines of December linked to the ICI-IMU-Tasi balance and the tax of ownership of the car, it is possible to the amount of the thirteenths destined for consumption that, including also the greater expense of the independent workers (i.e. entrepreneurs, free professionals and autonomous workers), is at 49.9 billion euros.
From this figure, it is estimated an average expenditure of thirteenth per family in December – including, in addition to gifts, all those expenses related to daily consumption such as food, clothing, free time etc. – equal to 1,964 euros, up 2.8% compared to 2024, 6.9% compared to 2019 and 12.3% compared to 2008.
According to the Confcommercio survey, in collaboration with Format research, this year for Christmas gifts will be spent in real terms 211 euro per capita: that remains substantially on the same level last year (210 euros), despite a greater availability of families. This, also because the Italians have increased in the last ten months of 2025 some consumer voices, dedicating a little more to leisure and recreational services, such as museums, cinemas and theatres, (+17%) and personal well-being (+4%), but also giving a new appliance (+10.5%) or eating more often at the restaurant (+0.8%). Consumptions that could grow further in this final part of the year.
Overall, however, this year for gifts will be spent 10.1 billion euros, the highest figure from 2020 to today. According to the survey, in 2025 the percentage of those who will live a more resigned Christmas (from 77.1% to 72.7% of 2024) and salt of 1.6 points (from 79.9% to 81.5%), the percentage of those who will make purchases for Christmas gifts 2025.
Finally, with regard to the propensity to purchase gifts, the survey is growing the number of Italians who consider this ‘returned a necessary spending always pleasant to deal, from 44.4% last Christmas, to 47.8% of the incoming one.
