TARANTO (ITALPRESS) – The Italian Triathlon Federation, under the auspices of the Mediterranean Triathlon Federation and World Triathlon, will organize the Mediterranean Championships on June 28 and 29, 2025 in Taranto.
The prestigious event will feature two triathlon competitions (men’s and women’s) over a sprint distance along the routes planned for the 2026 Mediterranean Games: the Mar Piccolo, the Aragonese Castle, the Bridge of St. Francis of Paola, the MARTA museum, Via Cesare Battisti, the Maritime Military Arsenal, and the Vittorio Emanuele III waterfront.
The event-which will be attended by national teams from the three continents bordering the Mediterranean Sea-will therefore be a true test event in anticipation of the 20th edition of the Games hosted in Puglia from August 21 to September 3, 2026 between Taranto (main venue), Lecce, Brindisi, Fasano and other locations.
In addition, a meeting of the national delegations participating in the Executive Board of the Mediterranean Triathlon Federation is scheduled for the Saturday before the race. “The countdown to the 2026 Mediterranean Games, to which the government is giving its full support, has already begun and an important stage of this path that will lead us to the great appointment, not only in sports, will be represented by the Mediterranean Championships with which triathlon will become the protagonist in Taranto on June 28 and 29,” comments Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi.
“A fascinating test in the places that will be the protagonists even more next year, with the participation of teams from the three continents bordering the Our Sea,” he added. The Mediterranean Championships will be an important test, both from the competitive point of view, for a first approach to the competition sites, and from the logistical and organizational point of view, in a period of great tourist presence, which will contribute to the promotion of this challenging and spectacular sporting discipline.
Carlo Molfetta, general director of the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games Organizing Committee, emphasizes for his part that “we are thrilled that the Italian Triathlon Federation has chosen our city for the prestigious 2025 Mediterranean Championships. This event represents the first official test event ahead of the 2026 Games and will bring international triathlon among the iconic venues of our city. A unique opportunity for athletes and citizens to experience a preview of the atmosphere of the Games, promoting sport and territory.”
Riccardo Giubilei, FiTri’s number one, thanks “the government, Minister Abodi and the Organizing Committee of the Mediterranean Games, in the person of dg Molfetta, for the teamwork that led to this umpteenth very important international event for our Federation and Italian sport.”
“Next year, at the Mediterranean Games, our beloved discipline will also be the protagonist – adds Giubilei – I would also like to thank George Yerolimpos, president of the Mediterranean Triathlon Federation, for having immediately shared this important project and all the nations that are part of the Federation: we are waiting for them in the City of the Two Seas to enjoy an exciting competition that will award the title of Mediterranean Champion. Puglia and Taranto, already the scene of the Italian Aquathlon Championships and, next June, of the World Triathlon Para Cup – one of the most important international competitions in the world – are for us at the center of a project of sports, territorial and inclusion enhancement.”
