WASHINGTON (ITALPRESS) – U.S. President Donald Trump and Irish Prime Minister Micheßl Martin celebrated the traditional St. Patrick’s Day ceremony in the East Room of the White House. Among those in attendance canche Riverdance star Michael Flatley, whom Trump described as “one of the world’s greatest dancers.”
Also in the audience were TDs Mattie McGrath and James O’Connor. “We have 5 million people living in Ireland, but we have 35 million people of Irish descent living here,” President Trump said at the event, adding that ties between the two countries date back to the founding of the United States. Trump later introduced the Irish minister with a joke: “He’s a very, very special man, he’s very popular, which is not easy in Ireland.”
During his speech, Martin said that the histories of the United States and Ireland are “interconnected because our peoples are interconnected today. Throughout the United States, men and women go to work every morning in Irish-owned companies. These companies play a key role in the U.S. economy, operating in every sector and in every state, we build prosperity through free and fair trade with partners around the world, and as we continue here in the United States, we continue to build on that foundation, bringing ever-increasing prosperity.”
Martin also reiterated the importance of further solidifying the U.S.-Ireland relationship, “We continue to work together to ensure that we maintain an extremely beneficial bilateral economic relationship that has allowed innovation, creativity and prosperity to flourish.” On the conflict in Ukraine Martin also praised the U.S. President for his efforts to bring peace, adding that Ireland stands ready to cooperate, “Too many children, in particular, have died in Gaza, in Israel, in Sudan, and too many children have been killed in Ukraine.”
