Trump hears Xi Jinping: focus on Taiwan, Ukraine and trade

WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – American President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping during a call addressed strategic issues such as bilateral trade, the situation of Taiwan and the crisis in Ukraine. The White House did not provide any further details.

According to the official Chinese press agency Xinhua, Xi Jinping reiterated that Taiwan’s return to mainland China is “an important part of the post-war international order”, underlining Beijing’s position on the issue.

During the conversation, Xi also recalled the shared history between the two countries, underlining that China and the United States, allies during World War II, should “examine jointly the victorious outcome of the conflict”, recalling a sense of historical responsibility in maintaining international stability. He also stated that the two parties should extend the list of cooperation and shorten the list of problems.

To make more positive progress, create new spaces for cooperation between China and the United States and make greater benefits to the populations of both countries and the world. The theme of bilateral trade was also at the centre of the interview, although no specific details were revealed on specific agreements, such as the purchase of American soy or other strategic supplies.

It remains to be seen whether these exchanges can be translated into concrete agreements or significant steps, but the conversation itself represents a signal of the strategic importance attributed to the relations between the United States and China.

The two presidents – according to Xinhua reports – also discussed the Ukrainian crisis. Xi stressed China’s support for all the efforts that contribute to peace and expressed the hope that the various parties can reduce their divergences, as soon as possible reach a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement and resolve the crisis at the root.
