WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – US President Donald Trump met with Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, Nobel Peace Prize. The bilateral, closed to the press, arrived less than two weeks after the U.S. forces captured former president Nicolás Maduro and his wife in Caracas and brought them to New York to respond to drug trafficking charges.
Machado chose not to answer the questions of the White House journalists at his meeting with Trump, or if he had given him the Nobel Peace Prize. According to White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt, Trump welcomed Machado as “a remarkable and courageous voice” while maintaining a “realistic” assessment of his ability to lead Venezuela. The president reiterated the United States’ commitment to support stability and security in the country, without a direct endorsement to Machado’s leadership.
The meeting coincides with the preparation of interim president Delcy Rodríguez, former vice president of Maduro, to his first speech on the state of Venezuelan union after the overthrow of Maduro. The White House confirmed its intention to maintain regular contacts with Rodríguez and other Venezuelan representatives, while the debate on political transition remains at the heart of Washington’s diplomatic priorities.
