WASHINGTON (ITALPRESS) – “We have several interlocutors engaged in talks with Iran at this time and, as it turns out, the counterparty would like to reach an agreement.” With these words, US President Donald Trump opened his speech to the White House, confirming the existence of ongoing diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran on a possible new negotiating framework. Trump explained that the Iranian dossier is followed by more figures of the administration, underlining an approach articulated to the negotiations: “We have a number of people working on this dossier. Our envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are involved in the talks, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.” The President added that the objective remains to maintain open diplomatic channels, although in an international context defined as complex and constantly evolving.
The statements on the Iranian front arrived during an intervention in the Oval Studio which also included an important oath ceremony. Trump has officially appointed Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as head of the Department of Homeland Security, instead of Kristi Noem, who leaves the post as part of a reorganization of the administration.
In presenting the new secretary, Trump used particularly emphatic tones: “We have with us a great American patriot, an extraordinary person at all points of view, a man who has demonstrated value, determination and loyalty to the country.” The president then underlined the political path of Mullin, recalling his years at the Congress and his role in the management of border security policies. “Markwayne Mullin represented the State of Oklahoma for thirteen years, first to the Chamber and then to the Senate. He was a key partner in strengthening border security, in contrast to illegal immigration and in combating drug trafficking. Everything he has done in his career has translated into concrete results,” Trump said, highlighting his operational and political profile.
The president then insisted on the origins of the new secretary, underlining how he is the first member of the Cherokee Nation to join a federal administration. “It’s a historical fact, and if I had known before I would have chosen it even faster,” he added. Ample space also to the personal and sporting past of Mullin, who Trump described as “a born fighter”. “It was a high-level athlete in martial arts and wrestling, a competitive and determined man. Looking at his ears you immediately understand that he is a wrestler”, said the president with informal tone.
In the course of the intervention, Trump also thanked those present at the ceremony, including Republican exponents and members of the administration, reaffirming political support for the new appointment. He then attacked the democratic management of the Department for delays in funding and migration policies, supporting the need for a more rigorous line on border control. The replacement of Kristi Noem marks one of the first major changes in Trump’s second presidential term. The former South Dakota governor, a central figure in the previous phase of the administration, leaves the post at a time of internal political tensions and debate on national security management. The new Homeland Security asset is part of a broader strategy of strengthening internal security and revising the operational priorities of the Department, while contacts on the Iranian dossier on the foreign front, considered one of the key nodes of the American diplomatic agenda.
