WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – “Orban is a great leader. We are considering the possibility of granting an exemption from sanctions on Russian oil to Hungary. “They have no other chances.” Donald Trump said this by answering a question from journalists on the arrival of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to the White House.
During the meeting, tycoon praised Orbán’s management, stating that Hungary “has no crime problems and governs very well. I think they should respect Hungary and this leader a lot, because he was right about immigration. Look what happened in Europe: people coming from all over the world are flooding the continent, causing many problems. Crime has increased and many negative things are happening. In Hungary crime rates are very low because he managed the situation correctly. In Europe many governments have made huge mistakes, but he was correct. The other leaders do not agree publicly, but they probably recognize internally that he was right.”.
Trump and Orbán also discussed the war in Ukraine. “We’re talking, but we’ll talk about it later. I also discussed with Putin, and Victor knows him very well. I think Victor will be able to end this war in a not too far future. The only pro-peace government is the United States and small Hungary in Europe. All other governments prefer to continue the conflict, thinking that Ukraine can win on the front, which is a mistake of assessment,” said Trump.
Orbán commented: “It’s a complicated matter. We are evaluating the demands and collaborating with the United States to seek viable solutions, in particular to contribute to peace and stability in Europe.” On the bilateral level, Orbán stressed the relaunch of relations between Budapest and Washington. “We are here to open a new chapter in relations between the United States and Hungary. During the democratic administration everything was blocked or cancelled. In the first ten months of his presidency, she restored the previous level of relations, improving and repairing what had been done wrong by the previous administration.”.
“Now we are in a good position to open a new chapter. We have many proposals on economic, military and political cooperation. The main question for us remains the closeness with Ukraine, which we consider priority. We would like to discuss with you how we can help support peace in the region.”.
On the subject of sanctions, Trump reiterated that Hungary was exempted: “We are evaluating the issue”, referring to the possibility of not applying American sanctions for the purchase of Russian oil by Budapest. Orbán defined the “vital” theme, underlining that his country, being unburdened by the sea, would have difficulty importing energy from other sources.
