Turkey, interior minister “1400 arrests in 5 days for protests”

ANKARA (TURKEY) (ITALPRESS) – Turkish authorities have arrested 1,418 people over five days in response to the rising wave of protests prompted by the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. This was announced by Ankara’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya through a post on X.

“To date, 1,418 suspects have been arrested in illegal demonstrations held since March 19, 2025,” the minister wrote. The arrest of Imamoglu, a leading figure in the main opposition force Republican People’s Party (Chp), marked the start of a series of demonstrations in Istanbul and other major cities in Turkey.

After Imamoglu’s arrest, the Istanbul governor’s office issued a four-day ban on all kinds of demonstrations and gatherings in the city on March 19. Following increasing demands to hold weekend demonstrations, authorities in Ankara and Izmir imposed five-day restrictions on March 21, further tightening the ban.
