WASHINGTON (UNITED STATES) (ITALPRESS) – The White House recently announced the imposition of new duties of 25 percent against countries importing oil from Venezuela starting April 2, 2025.
The measure comes as a result of yet another executive order by the Trump administration, which emphasized that the actions and policies of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro continue to pose an “unusual and extraordinary” threat to national security and U.S. foreign policy.
According to President Donald Trump, the activities of the Tren de Aragua gang, designated by the administration as a foreign terrorist organization, have contributed to the intensification of the Venezuelan threat internationally due to its extensive involvement in terrorist activities such as kidnappings, attacks and murders. According to White House reports, the policies of the previous administration also allegedly “facilitated infiltration into the United States by members of Tren de Aragua, enabling these dangerous criminals to establish a foothold in U.S. cities and prey on U.S. citizens.”
For this reason, the White House has ruled that from April 2, 2025 onward, a 25 percent tariff may be imposed on all goods imported into the United States from any country that imports Venezuelan oil, either directly or indirectly through third parties. The executive order also stipulates that the tariff, once imposed, will expire one year after the last date on which the country in question imported Venezuelan oil.
In this regard, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be tasked with determining whether a country has imported Venezuelan oil and in the event that it does, to issue any measures based on this executive order. In addition, the secretary of state and the secretary of commerce will be tasked with submitting periodic reports to the president within 180 days of the date of the newly issued executive order, so that the effectiveness of the tariffs and the course of action to be taken against Maduro’s government can be evaluated.
The executive order also specifies that Venezuelan oil means crude oil or petroleum products extracted, refined or exported from Venezuela, regardless of the nationality of the entity involved in the production or sale of the crude oil or petroleum products. These measures will also affect purchases of Venezuelan oil through intermediaries where the origin of the oil can be traced back to Venezuela.
