UGL celebrates 75 years, a commemorative stamp from Italian Postal Service

ROME (ITALPRESS) – The presentation of the commemorative stamp created to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the UGL union was held today at Spazio Wegil in Rome. The stamp, issued by Poste Italiane with a dedicated cancellation, is a tribute to the long history and role played by the UGL in protecting workers’ rights and defending collective bargaining in our country.

“Today we celebrate the history of the UGL union and the stories of people who have spanned the decades, from factory councils to kidnappings to union and social struggles. The union renews itself if it maintains its ability to interpret the contemporary season,” said Federico Mollicone, chairman of the Cultural Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. “In this regard, the UGL is leading an important battle on digital rights, defending creativity and human labor. Another aspect on which the UGL is at the forefront concerns worker participation. In this sense, the UGL’s contribution to the debate on the law that was passed in the House and is now being discussed in the Senate is important.”

According to Maurizio Gasparri, Senate Group Leader of Forza Italia, “the UGL is in the field today as a Confederation that is attentive to and the bearer of a participatory culture, thus opposed to an antagonistic culture of class confrontation. Integrating the values of national trade unionism, it inherits this will of the encounter between capital and labor, between the company and the employees, in the protection of the expectations and rights of the working world.”

UGL General Secretary Paolo Capone stressed the importance of this anniversary: “The stamp presented today is a symbol of the path that the UGL has taken over these 75 years alongside workers and, at the same time, represents a commitment to the future.”

During his speech, Capone also highlighted the importance of the law on worker participation in the management of companies: “We appreciate the overall structure of a law that is part of the genetic code of our organization. At the same time, we believe some corrections are necessary with particular regard to the mandatory application of Article 46 of the Constitution in state-owned companies, on the model successfully tested in RAI. Participation represents a corporate management model capable, on the one hand, of including workers in decision-making processes and redistributing earnings through profit sharing, and on the other, of increasing corporate productivity, supporting competitiveness and maintaining employment levels.”

According to the UGL Leader, “The dialogue initiated with the government on crucial issues such as active labor policies is also positive. The record increase in employment pictures an important turnaround and is a sign that the new measures are going in the right direction. The UGL looks particularly favorably on the cut in the tax burden to support the purchasing power of wages, and the increase in inspectors to strengthen controls and protect worker safety. Combating accidents at work is a battle that can only be won by strengthening the synergy between institutions, businesses and unions, investing in school training and safety culture.”

Finally, the secretary outlined a clear vision for the future: “The UGL has in mind a union that is not entrenched in outdated ideological vetoes and prejudices, but one that meets the new demands of a rapidly changing world of work. We need to abandon the logic of class struggle and put workers’ interests at the center. The UGL continues alongside those who work, those who have worked and those who want to enter the world of work, proud of its past and looking confidently at the new challenges we face, starting with the energy and digital transition. The goal is to affirm a new model of industrial relations based on workers’ participation in the management of enterprises and on the collaboration between capital and labor.”

Taking part in the event were Marco Gubbini, representative of Mimit; Marco De Nicola, Corporate Affairs Sales Manager of Philately Poste Italiane; and Nazzareno Mollicone, journalist and writer.
