(UNITED KINGDOM) (ITALPRESS) – “Italy has undoubtedly been a political laboratory of the West: many political phenomena have occurred from us in the last hundred years that have paved the way for enormous innovations in Europe and the world: from fascism to the populism of the Five Star Movement.” This was said by political scientist Alessandro Campi while opening at the Italian Cultural Institute in London “Italy. Thought, Future,” a series of English-language meetings curated by the director of the Italian Cultural Institute in London Francesco Bongarrà and journalist Massimo Sebastiani.
Reviewing the highlights of Italian politics, from the end of the First Republic to the Meloni government, Campi opened a series of lectures that will feature scientists, economists and philosophers in London between now and the end of the year. The political scientist took a long and articulate look at the topic of populism in Italy and the rest of the world.
“Is Macron a populist or not? Right now,” he explained, “the traditional definition of populism is complicated to apply because all politics wants to talk to everyone at all costs. And is this populism or not?” he asked. Then, a mention of the way Silvio Berlusconi “gave birth to a creature that did not exist before: the so-called center-right. Not simply a coalition,” he clarified, “but a real social bloc represented politically.
