BRUSSELS (BELGIUM) (ITALPRESS) – “As far as European defense is concerned, my goal is to follow up on our informal meeting on Feb. 3, to take the first decisions in the short term for Europe to become more sovereign, capable and better equipped to deal with immediate and future challenges on its security.” European Council President Antonio Costa wrote this in his letter of invitation to EU leaders for the extraordinary summit on March 6.
“With regard to Ukraine, there is a new momentum that should lead to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace,” Costa stresses. “It is therefore important for us to discuss how to further support Ukraine and the principles that should be respected in the future. The EU and its member states are ready to take greater responsibility for the security of Europe. We should therefore be prepared for a possible European contribution to the security guarantees that will be needed to ensure lasting peace in Ukraine.”
The EU Council president also announced that he had invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “to discuss with us the latest developments” at the March 6 summit.
