Ukraine, European leaders in Berlin: “Significant progress towards just peace”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The leaders welcomed significant progress in President Trump’s efforts to ensure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. They also welcomed the close collaboration between President Zelensky’s and President Trump’s teams, as well as with European teams in recent days and weeks.” So the joint declaration of European leaders, after the Berlin meeting: Chancellor Merz, Prime Minister Frederiksen, President Stubb, President Macron, Prime Minister Meloni, Prime Minister Schoof, Prime Minister Tusk, Prime Minister Kristersson, Prime Minister Starmer, President Costa and President von der Leyen.

“They agreed to cooperate with President Trump and President Zelensky to achieve lasting peace that take Ukrainian sovereignty and European security – they continue –. Leaders appreciated the strong convergence between the United States, Ukraine and Europe. Leaders agreed that ensuring the security, sovereignty and prosperity of Ukraine is fundamental to the wider Euro-Atlantic security. They were clear that Ukraine and its people deserved a prosperous, independent and sovereign future, free from fear of future Russian aggression.”.

“The U.S. leaders who Europeans have committed to collaborating to provide solid security guarantees and measures to support economic recovery for Ukraine in the context of an agreement to end the war. This would include the commitment to: To provide a continuous and significant support to Ukraine to strengthen its armed forces, which should remain at a level of 80,000 effective in peacetime to be able to discourage conflicts and defend the Ukrainian territory – the leaders still say –. A European-led “Ukraine multinational force”, made up of contributions from nations available in the context of the Coalition of the Lovers and supported by the United States. It will contribute to the regeneration of the Ukrainian forces, to the security of the Ukrainian skies and to support the safety of the seas, also operating within Ukraine. A mechanism of monitoring and verification of the ceasefire led by the United States with international participation to provide a timely alert of any future attack and attribute and respond to any violations, along with a mechanism of deconflittuality to work on reciprocal de-escalation actions that can be undertaken to benefit all parties. A legally binding commitment, subject to national procedures, to take measures to restore peace and security in the event of a future armed attack. Such measures may include the use of armed forces, intelligence and logistic assistance, as well as economic and diplomatic actions.”.

“To invest in the future prosperity of Ukraine, even by providing substantial resources for recovery and reconstruction, mutually beneficial trade agreements and taking into account the need for Russia to compensate Ukraine for the damages caused – we still read in the statement –. In this context, Russian sovereign assets in the European Union have been immobilized. Strictly support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. The leaders expressed their support to President Zelensky and agreed to support any decision that will take on specific Ukrainian issues. They reiterated that international borders should not be changed by force. The decisions on the territory are the responsibility of the Ukrainian people once solid security guarantees are in force. They agreed that some issues should be resolved at the end of the negotiations. They stressed that they would support President Zelensky in consulting his people if necessary. They were clear that, as in any agreement, nothing is agreed until everything is agreed and that all parties must work hard for a solution that can guarantee a lasting end to the fights. They were also clear that any agreement should protect the security and long-term unity of the Euro-Atlantic area and NATO’s role in providing effective deterrence. They said that any element that concerns the EU and NATO will be discussed among EU and NATO members, respectively.”.

“Now it is up to Russia to demonstrate its willingness to work for lasting peace by accepting President Trump’s peace plan and demonstrating its commitment to end the fights with a ceasefire. Leaders agreed to continue exerting greater pressure on Russia to persuade Moscow to negotiate seriously – concludes the joint declaration of leaders –. They are all committed to working to obtain further rapid progress in the coming days and weeks to conclude and jointly approve an agreement for lasting peace. They reiterated their strong support for President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people in the fight against the illegal invasion of Russia and in the attainment of a just and lasting peace.”.
