Ukraine, Trump “Putin will make concessions, I hope to save many lives”

WASHINGTON (USA) (ITALPRESS) – US President Donald Trump believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be forced to make concessions to reach an agreement on the war in Ukraine. “At this point he will make concessions. Everyone is making concessions to achieve the goal,” he said, answering the questions of journalists on board the Air Force One during the return flight to Washington, after the participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Trump stressed that Europe should be an integral part of the negotiating process, reasserting that a possible agreement would be especially in the European interest. “I do this to save human lives. I do this first of all for this and secondly for Europe. I don’t do that much for us, because apart from the loss of human lives we haven’t touched directly. We are separated from an ocean,” explained the American president.

Referring to contacts with Kiev, Trump spoke of “numerous conversations” had with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, defining them largely positive. But he expressed skepticism about immediate developments, observing that “if you do not meet, nothing will happen”, but that at the same time meetings do not guarantee automatic results.

With regard to the trilateral planned in Abu Dhabi between the United States, Russia and Ukraine, Trump said that every occasion of dialogue is useful, hoping that it can contribute to “saving many lives”. The president also referred to indirect contacts with Moscow, explaining that his adviser Jared Kushner is currently traveling to the Russian capital and that the American administration is carefully following the evolution of the situation. Trump reiterated that it was possible to consider an agreement that avoids further escalation.

“I thought Putin wanted everything. Perhaps it is, but it will not go if we reach agreement.” During the meeting with journalists, Trump also spoke about the framework agreement in the negotiation phase on Greenland, defining it a timeless process. “It’s infinite, it’s forever,” he said, explaining that the understanding would allow the United States a broad operational freedom, even on the military level, in collaboration with NATO. Trump added that the agreement would be positive not only for the United States but also for Europe, reaffirming Washington’s central role in the security of the continent.

“We hold everything together,” he said. To the question whether Denmark shares this approach, Trump said optimistic, stating that “please everyone” and promising clarification within two weeks.
